Kalvin Phillips deal slips away from Manchester United while rivals enter race for England star

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has emerged as Manchester City’s main midfield target this summer as Pep Guardiola looks to replace Fernandinho, according to reports.

Learning to cope with Sergio Aguero was always going to be a challenge for Guardiola this season, which is why they didn’t wrap up the Premier League title until the final day of the campaign.

This summer Guardiola must accept that he will be losing his captain in Fernandinho, who has been an incredible servant to our rivals in since arriving in England, and the Telegraph claims Man City will look to beat Manchester United to Kalvin Phillips’ signature this summer.

There has also been reports of interest from United, as per the Manchester Evening News, but The Telegraph’s James Ducker is a reliable journalist and he claims the Leeds-born midfielder has not been enamoured by the idea of a move to Old Trafford out of loyalty to Leeds fans.

It has been a difficult season for Phillips, with Leeds narrowly avoiding relegation from the top-flight.

Phillips missed four months of the season with a long-term hamstring injury but did his bit at the end of the season to help keep their status as a Premier League club.

Ultimately, I don’t want to sign any players who are not 100% committed to playing for United, and that quite clearly wouldn’t be the case for Phillips.

It’s a shame because he is a very good footballer.
