Gary Neville agrees with Jurgen Klopp over Antonio Conte claims

Manchester United were linked with Antonio Conte in October but the club opted against appointing the Italian manager. Former club captain Gary Neville still believes it was the right decision.

Conte was heavily linked with the United job when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in October, but it is thought now that the club had reservations over his style of football and confrontation approach.

Although United beat Tottenham 3-2 in March at Old Trafford, Conte’s side are now ahead in the Premier League table and they will push for a fourth-place finish with local rivals Arsenal.

United’s decision to not go with Conte was deemed controversial by some and Tottenham’s improved has added weight to the argument. That said, Neville stands by his opinion that Conte was never the right man for United.

Neville’s comments come one day after Tottenham drew 1-1 with Liverpool by playing pragmatic football, the type we became used to under Jose Mourinho.

Jurgen Klopp was heard moaning at full-time and Neville believes the German raised some valid points about why he wasn’t the ‘right fit’ for United in October.

“I respect Conte and his football enormously but this Klopp interview gives the clear reason why he wasn’t the right fit for United,” Neville wrote on Twitter.

I much prefer the idea of appointing Erik ten Hag over Conte… At least we should see some entertaining football and a team that can pass the ball.
