Erik ten Hag identifies eight-man core at Manchester United, while trio are under review

We are expecting to see a lot of players leave Old Trafford this summer.

Even though it’s been a difficult season for the club to go five years without a trophy, we won’t be saying goodbye to every player, like some fans will suggest should happen on social media.

Erik ten Hag will need time to get to know his squad, but reports suggest he is already making plans ahead of taking the reins at Old Trafford this summer.

According to The Telegraph, Ten Hag will try to ‘revitalise’ Harry Maguire’s career by investigating why he appears more comfortable playing for England than United.

Furthermore, it is understood that he will give Marcus Rashford a chance to succeed under his watch, despite there being a growing sense that club and player could both benefit from parting ways.

The report adds that while Ten Hag evaluates Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Maguire and Rashford, he has already settled on a core of ‘roughly eight players’ that he will trust and build his new team around. He also agrees with Ralf Rangnick’s assessment that United need up to 10 new players, which he won’t get while the Glazers own the club.

Stepping away from the report from a second, I think every player in the squad needs to be under review when Ten Hag arrives ahead of next season.

He may have a quick look and make some early judgements but that will change if some of these players in his apparent ‘eight-man core’ let him down.
