Player Ratings: Manchester United 3-0 Brentford – Mata shines, Ronaldo sets standards

A comfortable win for Manchester United.

We have not been able to say that a lot this season but we dealt with all the pressure Brentford threw at us tonight, even if David de Gea had a few awkward moments dealing with the away side’s high press in the first-half.

It’s a shame that it we’ve had one of our better performances in a meaningless game after accepting that we won’t be qualifying for the Champions League next season.

The players gave a round of applause at full-time and the vast majority of fans stayed at Old Trafford on the 73rd minute, despite a planned walkout.

De Gea – 7

A few nervy moments in the first half but he made a trademark save with his feet just before the hour mark. Also did well to stop a free-kick from Christian Eriksen. Good to get a clean sheet because we’ve had nowhere near enough of them this season.

Dalot – 5

Hit crossbar with an effort on goal and came close to assisting Ronaldo with a cross in the first half. Better than his usual self.

Lindelof – 6

Both centre-backs played a role in the clean sheet.

Varane – 7

Scored his first goal for United tonight. Hope he can stay fit next season.

Telles – 5

Far from his worst performance after recovering from an error in the opening seconds.

Matic – 7

Brought some assurance to the midfield. Wish him well next season wherever he goes.

McTominay – 4

Another below par performance. Not sure if it’s a confidence thing because we’ve had a terrible season but there needs to be proper development work done with McTominay over the next year.

Fernandes – 6

Good finish to open the scoring. Unlucky not to make it a brace after 53 minutes.

Mata – 8

Why hasn’t Mata started more games this season? Strong performance.

Elanga – 6

Brilliant assist for Fernandes in the first-half. Faded after that moment of brilliance.

Ronaldo – 9 [MOTM]

Enjoyed playing with Mata. Deserved his goal for a brilliant performance where he set standards.

Subs

Fred – 6

Decent cameo after returning from injury.

Jones – 5

Looks like his final performance in a United shirt at OId Trafford. Like Matic, I wish him well.

Cavani – 5

Another waving goodbye.
