Cristiano Ronaldo moves a step closer to World Cup qualification

Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot all started for Portugal in the 2022 World Cup play-off semi-final against Turkey.

Portugal went on to win the game 3-1 after goals from Otavio, Diogo Jota and Mathues Nunes.

Up next for Ronaldo and co is North Macedonia, who shocked the football world when they knocked out Euro 2020 winners Italy, and the game will take place next Tuesday.

The winner will book a place in the Qatar World Cup which begins in November.

However, Ronaldo is refusing to get too carried away. He has insisted that nothing has yet been achieved and Portugal must stay grounded for now.

On Instagram, Ronaldo said: “The first step towards our great objective, towards the 2022 World Cup. Nothing gained, nothing gained.

“We must continue to work hard and [remain] focused, respecting the opponent but always believing in our abilities. Come on Portugal!

“Off to Qatar!”

Portugal have not failed to reach the World Cup since 1998. On top of that, if they qualify, they will be doing their utmost to go beyond the round-of-16 stage for the first time since 2006.

It’s likely to be Ronaldo’s final World Cup.
