Wayne Rooney could make a sensation return to Everton if the board decide to sack Rafa Benitez.

Everton majority owner Farhad Moshiri would prefer to see Benitez turn things around at Goodison Park. The Spaniard is his fifth managerial appointment at the club.

The former Liverpool manager was always going to be an unpopular choice with fans who, if given the chance, would probably prefer Rooney in charge despite his lack of experience.

Everton are believed to be drawing up a contingency plan if they dump Benitez.

And Rooney, who faces a real challenge to keep Derby in the Championship again this season, is one of their targets for the job, as per The Sun.

The former Manchester United striker has earned praise as a manager after succeeding Phillip Cocu 13 months ago.

Although Rooney will want to finish the current campaign at Derby, it’s unlikely that he would turn down a move back to Goodison Park.

Everton face Chelsea on Thursday and know that if results don’t improve they will sink lover than 14th in the Premier League standings.

This could be an opportunity too good to turn down for Rooney.
