Man Utd defender remains hopeful of first-team chance as Jose Mourinho targets 22-year-old

Diogo Dalot is yet to start a Premier League game this season and with less than two years remaining on his contract, there are doubts over his long-term future at Manchester United.

The Portugal international has been limited to just two starts so far, one in the Carabao Cup exit to West Ham and the other in the Champions League win against Villarreal when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was suspended.

Wan-Bissaka remains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice on the right side of defence but questions are being asked of his attacking output, an area Dalot clearly holds the upper hand in.

According to BBC journalist Simon Stone, Dalot has not given up hope he could force his way into the first-team picture at Manchester United amid criticism of Wan-Bissaka.

There are, however, interested parties should the defender depart Old Trafford. One possible suitor is AS Roma, with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said to be interested. As per the report from Stone, it is possible that Dalot sees the campaign out with Solskjaer’s side.

SN’s verdict on Mourinho’s interest and Dalot’s future at the club…
Roma’s interest in Dalot won’t come as a surprise to many – Dalot excelled on loan at AC Milan last season and has eased any fears that come with joining a new league. Furthermore, Mourinho signed Dalot for Manchester United in 2018 and there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t want to repeat the trick.

As things stand, Wan-Bissaka losing his place at right-back seems unlikely. Therefore, an exit for Dalot could prove to be the fastest route into first-team action.

In addition to United’s current right-back duo, youngster Ethan Laird is also waiting in the wings for his chance. The 20-year-old is impressing at Swansea and has quickly cemented his place as a starter in the Championship.
