Jesse Lingard responds to fans on social media after encounter with furious fan vs. Liverpool

Jesse Lingard was an unused substitute against Liverpool as Manchester United extended their winless run to four games with an embarrassing performance against their bitter rivals.

Liverpool took an early lead through Naby Keita, Diogo Jota doubled it before three goals from Mohamed Salah sealed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fate on the day.

Boos rang around Old Trafford for the second consecutive game, with Liverpool leaving Old Trafford with their biggest ever win in the Premier League era.

Lingard, who has yet to start a Premier League game this season, was warming up on the sidelines when a furious fan caught his attention. The 28-year-old midfielder responded to the fan and has now cleared up what happened.

“It wasn’t abuse!” Lingard wrote on Twitter. “He said ‘work harder’, like I’m not already doing that day in day out. And I said ‘I’m not even on the pitch’ – end of!”

The incident is typical of a side not clicking and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will, once again, need to take responsibility for letting his side’s performance affect the supporter’s relationships with the players.

Lingard resurrected his career last season on loan at West Ham but still, despite impressive cameo performances this season, he is not under consideration by the Norwegian manager.
