Manchester United could make U-turn in Declan Rice pursuit

Manchester United didn’t sign a midfielder in the summer transfer market and it felt like West Ham’s Declan Rice was priced out of a move. Reports now claim the Red Devils are looking for alternatives next summer.

According to ESPN, Manchester United scouts have been instructed to identify alternative options to Declan Rice as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeks a defensive midfielder.

There are concerns over West Ham’s valuation of the player and contrasting opinions within Old Trafford over his ability to significantly improve the team.

He certainly looks like the missing piece to the jigsaw, but that is not to say he is the only or best option for the role, and United are right to do their homework before spending millions.

A year of scouting defensive midfielders is what they should be doing anyhow.

Rice, 22, is becoming a fantastic player for both West Ham and England.

He was one of Gareth Southgate’s key players as the Three Lions reached their first major tournament final since the 1966 World Cup.
