Manchester United predicted XI vs Young Boys: Van de Beek and Lingard come into Ronaldo-inspired team

Manchester United are back in the Champions League again as the Reds travel to Switzerland to take on Young Boys.

Young Boys will be trying to prove they are not this year’s whipping boys in a group that also consists of Villarreal and Atalanta.

United had a terrible Champions League campaign last term, ending up in the Europa League and throwing the clear point advantage in their UCL group, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to start the new campaign as they mean to go on.

Cristiano Ronaldo made his homecoming at Old Trafford at the weekend, starting against Newcastle and scoring a brace in a 4-1 win.

But it’s unclear if Solskjaer is willing to throw him back in against Young Boys when there will be bigger games coming up.

With that being said, here’s Stretty News’ predicted XI for Manchester United’s first Champions League match of the season.

In goal will be David de Gea – with Dean Henderson probably requiring a few more training sessions and time with the U23s before making his return to compete with the Spaniard for the first-choice spot.

A back four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw makes the most sense to us, with Alex Telles needing more time on the training ground before he can get some minutes under his belt.

Victor Lindelof is definitely in with a shout to start alongside one of Varane or Maguire, but I think it’s important that our defence gets a run of games together to form a stronger relationship between all.

I suspect Fred will come back into the team instead of Nemanja Matic, with Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes. I think we can afford to leave Paul Pogba out from the start in this one.

And a frightening front three of Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jesse Lingard.

Edinson Cavani has been ruled out after not travelling to Switzerland with the rest of the squad.

SN’s XI: De Gea, AWB, Varane, Maguire, Shaw, Fred, Van de Beek, Fernandes, Sancho, Ronaldo, Lingard.
