Spain has missed their last five international penalties and with Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea not best known for his ability to save from the spot, Luis Enrique has forced his side to put in extra practice ahead of Euros 2020 knockout rounds.
That’s according to a recent report from Marca, who claims not only are the country’s three goalkeepers practicing their short-range stopping, the coaching staff are instructing them to take penalties too.
De Gea recently hit sporting headlines after failing to save a single penalty against Villarreal in last season’s Europa League final. The Spaniard’s misery was piled on after he then missed his own spot-kick to award the La Liga side with the trophy.
However, now back in action with his country, Enrique and his coaching staff are keen to ensure De Gea and the other international players do not put in a repeat performance.
Spain is set to play 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia in the competition’s Round of 16 knockout game, which is scheduled to take place on Monday (5pm kick-off UK time).
