Manchester United pencil in medical for first signing, contract to be signed this week

Manchester United are poised to complete their first signing of the summer as soon as next week, after breakthrough strides has been made in negotiations. Free agent Tom Heaton is set to seal a return to the club after being released from Aston Villa.

It’s set to be a busy summer in the goalkeeping department for the club, having already released Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira. Lee Grant has been offered a new contract but is yet to sign, whilst David de Gea’s future at the club remains in doubt.

Dean Henderson has assumed the responsibilities as Solskjaer’s first choice in the league, but was snubbed in favour of the Spaniard in last month’s Europa League final defeat to Villareal.

But according to journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are set to complete a deal to bring Tom Heaton back to the club.

According to Romano, the 35-year-old will sign a two-year deal at the club with an option to extend his stay a further year.

Heaton is a former academy graduate at the club and is likely to see out his career at Old Trafford, but will also be hoping to make his league debut. The former Burnley goalkeeper failed to make a Premier League appearance for the senior side, instead going out on loan to six clubs in his 8-year spell.

Official announcement of the signing is expected to come next month, but Manchester United supporters will be hoping that a certain Borussia Dortmund winger walks through the door before that deal is closed.
