Derby County want Manchester United’s Teden Mengi for another season on loan

Derby County are expected to re-sign Teden Mengi on loan from Manchester United this summer.

Wayne Rooney is preparing for his first full season in charge of the Championship side after doing enough to avoid relegation last term.

According to The Athletic, Derby are getting ready to offer Mengi a season-long loan deal in order to secure more regular game time for the Rams.

Mengi, 19, joined Derby in February but had to return to Carrington early due to injury. He played nine times in the Championship and I can genuinely see him being a starter at the back under Rooney when the 2021/22 campaign gets underway.

The sky is the limit with this England youth international and he has been at United since the age of 7, managing just one senior appearance to date. Another loan move to Derby could bring him closer to more first team action at Old Trafford.

I’d like to eventually see Mengi get a chance at United but now isn’t the right time for that.

Solskjaer needs to go into the transfer market and sign a top class centre-back to partner Harry Maguire, and it’s a little too soon for Mengi.
