Paul Scholes says Manchester United have the best squad in the Europa League.
I’m not one to disagree with this statement, but the former Manchester United midfielder sounded very sure of his opinion after watching United beat Real Sociedad 4-0 over two legs in the round of 32.
The win booked United’s place in the next round, with the draw set to place in the next hour. All seeding has been removed for the draw, meaning United could face any of the remaining teams in the competition in the next round, even one of the Premier League sides.
Speaking to BT Sport, Scholes said United will see the Europa League as a trophy they can win.
He said (as quoted via Manchester Evening News): “Man United have the best squad left in the competition. We thought that last year, but obviously Sevilla were around then and we know what they’re like in the Europa League, so they found it difficult.
“This is a great chance for United to win the Europa League, there could be some great games, but there could be some rubbish games – let’s wait and see.
“Man United are much better than Arsenal and Tottenham. I think United would cruise past Milan.”
The team will know how important it is that Solskjaer lands a trophy this season. We are doing well in the league, placed second and know that there’s a chance of winning silverware after reaching the latter stages of the Europa League and FA Cup again.
This season it’s about winning at least one of those trophies.
It would lift some pressure off Solskjaer and help give the squad a taste of winning something together. That is very important for any side looking to become the best.
