Paul Scholes thinks United are one player away from challenging for PL

Paul Scholes thinks this Manchester United are a quality defender away from challenging for the Premier League. He feels a dominant centre-back would take the team to the next level.

Paul Scholes and Jake Humphries took a look at Manchester United’s upcoming fixtures after tonight’s 3-1 win over Newcastle, shown live on BT Sport.

The biggest question on the agenda was where are United heading this season?

Not long ago we were top of the table and the media wanted to prematurely drag us into a Premier League title race. Although I can’t side with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s response to that, winning the title was not seen as a realistic objective this season but now it’s a matter of securing second place as far as we’re concerned in the league.

We really shouldn’t let that slip at a minimum.

Scholes thinks Chelsea are “toothless” in the final third – with the only game to be concerned about being Man City away. Pep Guardiola’s side are playing so well at the moment and being 10 points clear as things stand it’s hard to see either Leicester City or us catching up.

Moving on with the conversation, Scholes made a point of United not needing to fear dropping out of the top four this season because he believes the players are too young to fall that low.

Watch the footage below on BT Sport:

Solskjaer’s ex-teammate outlines the need for a quality centre-back in the summer if United plan to challenge next season. He thinks Maguire “possibly” could be part of a title-winning side but more is required to be at the top.

Scholes adds that the team is not a million miles away. He thinks a real dominant centre-back with quality could take United to the next level.
