Former Southampton striker Charlie Austin has shockingly revealed that Manchester United opted to sign Victor Lindelof over Virgin Van Vijk.
Van Dijk, 29, joined Liverpool in the summer of 2018 after making a £76.19m switch from Southampton, as per Transfermarkt.
Since joining Jurgen Klopp’s Redmen, love him, or hate him, the Dutch defender’s impact has been huge.
Van Dijk’s rock solid capabilities in defence have seen his side emerge as one of Europe’s most prolific sides during a two-year period which has seen them lift the Premier League and Champions League.
However, despite Van Dijk’s impressive form at Liverpool, according to Austin, the Dutch star came within touching distance of joining United only for the club to favour current defender Lindelof.
🤷♂️ “At #SaintsFC I said to Virgil that surely Man Utd had to be in for him.”
😲 “Virgil told me it was between him & Victor Lindelof…”
🔴 “I’m not sure [if he wanted Utd move], his heart was set on #LFC.”
