Damning stat proves Solskjaer has obvious decision to make with Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani is everything Manchester United have been missing in a centre-forward for a number of years.

The Uruguayan forward showed relentless tenacity and goalscoring instinct as United returned to the top of the Premier League with victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Cavani anticipated his chance expertly for the equaliser and almost had another after exceptional movement allowed him a headed opportunity after the break that was well saved by Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has entrusted Anthony Martial but Cavani’s predatory instinct is highlighting the glaring improvement a natural ‘number 9’ brings.

As noted by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Cavani now has more league goals than Martial this term despite making nine fewer starts.

Martial has started from the left in the last two fixtures and is misfiring right now. Cavani, meanwhile, is in optimum form and has the experience and proficiency in all areas to be Solskjaer’s first choice frontman as United enter a most improbable title charge.

Solskjaer missed a trick by not starting his most seasoned goalscorer against Liverpool at Anfield but that mistake won’t be made twice by the Norwegian based on tonight’s evidence in West London.
