Why Daniel James is starting for Manchester United against Leeds

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Daniel James has the qualities to be ‘very valuable’ for Manchester United against old rivals Leeds United.

James has been handed his first United start since October 24 and will start on the right-flank in a three-pronged attack with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The Welshman famously came close to signing for Leeds last January before his Old Trafford switch and he will be desperate to make an impact against Marcelo Bielsa’s men on his fourth league start of the season.

James’ inclusion has prompted some mixed reactions from United supporters on social media, but Solskjaer is confident he will be justified in his selection.

“He’s [James] worked really hard, we know his qualities, I think today his qualities will be very valuable for us,” he told MUTV, as quoted by Utdreport.

“We’ve found a role for him to play tonight and I think, well I hope, it’s going to work out well.”

Rotation is key right now with United beginning a hectic Christmas schedule and the James inclusion makes perfect sense against today’s opposition.

James is a relentless runner who has been trusted to match the intensity of Marcelo Bielsa’s high pressing side.

Leeds usually afford teams plenty of space on the break and James should have the opportunity to thrive offensively as well as being diligent in defence.

And should James fail to deliver, the likes of Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood are waiting in the wings on a strong bench.
