Mason Greenwood has responded to Rio Ferdinand on social media after the Manchester United great waxed lyrical about the teenager’s potential.
The youngster made a brief cameo in Tuesday’s 4-1 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford, setting up Daniel James for the fourth goal in the closing stages.
Ferdinand was impressed with Greenwood’s showing and reiterated his excitement at how good he could become in the future.
The United great compared Greenwood’s ruthless finishing ability with that of his former teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“He’s going to be a beast to go with the technique he’s got, his understanding and spacial awareness,” he said on BT Sport, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“He plays off both feet and he’s a devastating finisher. I want to go and watch training, that’s what he gets out of me. I want to go and see his technique, him lashing balls into the back of the net.
“We talk about people like Ruud van Nistelrooy – it excites you when you see people that finish aggressively and with precision – he’s got that in abundance.”
Van Nistelrooy is arguably the best finisher in United’s recent history, scoring a remarkable 150 goals in 219 appearances during his time at the club.
Comparisons to the former Dutch marksman aren’t made lightly but Greenwood has proven he warrants Ferdinand’s praise.
Ferdinand tweeted after United’s win: “This guy makes me wanna go watch training. More to come from Mason Greenwood!”.
Greenwood simply responded to the tweet from a former player he surely looks up to with a love heart emoji.
