Manchester United are increasingly unlikely to sign prime target Jadon Sancho on transfer deadline day.

United had appeared to exhaust all avenues in pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Sancho over the last few months but the horror of Sunday’s 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham gave some hope that a miraculous deal in the final hours could be completed to appease supporters.

Unfortunately for those who still harboured hope over Sancho’s possible arrival, BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone has all but ruled out the possibility.

In an update on the BBC’s deadline day live blog, Stone reiterates Dortmund’s stance over not selling their 20-year-old winger after their own August 10 deadline passed.

Stone adds that ‘it would take something extraordinary’ for Sancho to make the switch to Old Trafford with just hours in the current window now remaining.

United’s requirement for a right-sided forward has been glaring all summer but the club are somehow in a position where they have to explore alternative targets on the final day of the window.

Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell has backed up Stone’s report that Sancho will remain in Germany and states that the club are instead working on a deal for Barcelona outcast Ousmane Dembele.

Whitwell also expects United to announce the signings of Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles.
