Manchester United youngster pulls out of England U21 squad with injury setback

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has been forced to pull out of England’s Under-21 squad with a minor injury problem.

Williams will not be able to join up with Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd and his squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Kosovo and Austria next month.

The Crumpsall-born teenager has made four appearances for England’s Under-20’s and was set to represent the Under-21’s for the first time had he not picked up a knock.

United’s official website have described Williams’ injury as a ‘minor foot problem’ so it is unlikely to rule him out for the start of the Premier League season which begins in under a month’s time.

Williams has enjoyed a stellar breakthrough season for the Reds and was fully deserving of international recognition after a series of impressive first-team performances.

The 19-year-old was not even selected in Solskjaer’s pre-season tour to Australia and the Far East last summer, but made his mark when coming in as an injury replacement for Luke Shaw.

Along with Mason Greenwood, Williams has been the academy success story of the season, establishing himself as an important member of the United squad.

Williams was rewarded with a new four-year contract earlier this month, keeping him at his boyhood club until 2024.
