Roma face competition from European giants in pursuit of United’s Smalling; offer could include winger in exchange

Manchester United could spark a bidding war for cast-away centre-back Chris Smalling as Roma and Italian champions Juventus look set to battle it out for the Englishman’s signature.

Smalling, 30, has managed to reignite his career during a season long loan move with Roma in a campaign which has seen the Englishman bag three goals, with his latest coming against Torino last week.

However, according to Sky Sports Italia as cited by Express, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward set August 3 for the deadline for any permanent deal for Smalling which now looks set to pass and the Englishman return to Manchester, as per Republica.

The latest in the Smalling saga comes this morning after Calciomercato as cited by The Mirror, claim that newly crowned Italian champions Juventus have entered the race for the 30-year-old.

According to the report, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Old Lady are keen on bringing the English defender to the Allianz Stadium and could use winger Federico Bernardeschi as part of the offer.

As speculation continues to grow over Smalling’s future, one thing is for sure, his United career is almost certainly over and with the club looking to bolster the squad, additional funds could prove vital after what has been a turbulent season, financially.
