Timothy Fosu-Mensah has been training with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong as he aims to maintain his fitness during this unprecedented lockdown period.
As reported by Manchester Evening News on Thursday, United have triggered the one-year extension in the young defender’s contract.
Fosu-Mensah’s current deal was set to expire this summer, but Solskjaer has chosen to keep him at the club until at least the end of next season.
The 22-year-old has not played for United’s first-team since the final day of the 2016/17 season and loan spells at Crystal Palace and Fulham were unsuccessful.

Fosu-Mensah has yet to feature under Solskjaer, but has played two u23 fixtures this term coming back from anterior cruciate ligament damage sustained at Fulham.
Next season will be make or break for Fosu-Mensah at Old Trafford; the Dutchman must impress the United manager in pre-season in order to work his way into his first-team plans.
After the club also decided to extend the deals of Nemanja Matic and Eric Bailly, Angel Gomes remains the only player out of contract this summer.
We hope Gomes can soon commit his long-term future to United as he is one of the most talented players to come out of the academy in years.
