Report: Elite manager is ahead of Pochettino as leading candidate for Man Utd job

Massimiliano Allegri has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next Manchester United manager if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sacked, according to reports.

United are currently in ninth position in the Premier League and have won just nine out of 25 league games this season.

Pressure on Solskjaer is high and failure to qualify for Champions League football could make the club reconsider whether he is the man to take the club forward.

And according to Sport Mediaset,  Allegri is now ahead of Mauricio Pochettino as the leading candidate to eventually take over the Norwegian.

Pochettino had been many United fans’ favourite and recently expressed his desire to return to management in the Premier League.

However, this report states that Allegri, who has been out of work since leaving Juventus at the end of last season, is in pole position.

Allegri won five Serie A titles and finished runner up in the Champions League twice in Turin and is clearly a manager of an elite pedigree.

But questions would have to be posed if he is the ideal candidate to rebuild a United squad that is not anywhere near challenging at Europe’s highest level.

Meanwhile, as reported by the Telegraph, Pochettino is being considered as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Regardless, Manchester Evening News have reported that United have no intention to sack Solskjaer in the near future.
