Report: AC Milan rejected chance to sign 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder

According to reports in Italy, AC Milan rejected the chance to sign Nemanja Matic in last month’s transfer window.

CalcioMercato claim the Serbian midfielder was offered to the Serie A Club, but Milan chose to spend their funds elsewhere.

Matic currently has six months left on his current deal and it is unclear as to whether he will yet extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond this season.

We are dubious as to whether Matic was actually available this month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is obviously keen to rebuild his Manchester United squad and is looking for long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes.

But at 31-years-old, Matic is one of the most experienced members of the squad and surely would not have been let go in a month United were desperate for midfield additions rather than outgoings.

Matic has stepped up over the last few weeks in the absence of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay who still remain sidelined through long-term injuries.

The Serbian international has created a solid, if not creative midfield partnership with Fred in recent weeks and was key in almost turning the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City with his goal the winner at the Etihad.

We will have to wait and see the club can agree terms and Matic can extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond three years.
