Michael Owen raises doubts over Man Utd striker despite scoring brace against Newcastle

Michael Owen has raised doubts over Anthony Martial’s consistency after the Frenchman scored a brace against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Still a young player at 24, the former AS Monaco striker has not added consistency to his game yet and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may need to sign a more prominent goalscorer in the transfer market.

But after scoring two goals yesterday against Newcastle we can only hope Martial has a strong finish to the season and helps United clinch a place in the top four to secure Champions League football next season.

Former United striker Owen is a fan of Martial but states he must become more consistent.

“I think when we talk about consistency, Martial would be the one you would label,” he told the Premier League (via Goal.com).

“If Manchester United were back and firing on all cylinders at the top of the table, I think he would be much more consistent as a player.

“When games sort of drift and they’re not in control, then I think [Marcus] Rashford still gives you something, I still think [Mason] Greenwood will give you something, and that’s when he [Martial] can go missing a little bit.

“But when he’s on form he’s a proper player.”

Martial endeared himself to fans instantly after his move from Monaco in the summer of 2015 with a debut goal against Liverpool. He then went on to score 17 goals across all competitions in his first season.

That tally remains his highest in a single season for the club showing that he has since struggled to fulfil his vast potential, though it doesn’t help that he’s been playing in struggling United sides since his arrival.

Martial has six goals to his name in 12 Premier League outings this term. We hope we adds to that this weekend when United travel to Turf Moor.
