Man Utd starlet misses U21 match ahead of possible start in Premier League opener against Chelsea

Manchester United wonderkid Mason Greenwood has been left out of tonight’s under 21 EFL Trophy game against Rotherham.

Greenwood has made a huge impression in the first-team setup since being handed his debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the famous win over PSG last season, and now looks like he is in line to feature against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 17-year-old has scored twice in pre-season and was one of Solskjaer’s best performers during the tour. His most notable moment came with the winning goal against Inter Milan with a classy finish late on.

Solskjaer has made no secret of his plans to give Greenwood regular first-team football this season, and the omission in tonight’s game proves he is preparing for Sunday’s Premier League opener.

It is unclear whether Greenwood will start the game despite his efforts in pre-season, as Solskjaer also has the likes of Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata to play alongside Marcus Rashford in attack, but the youngster will likely feature at some point, perhaps from the bench as Chelsea legs begin to tire.

Greenwood is one of the most promising talents to come out of the academy in recent years and there are high hopes for him at Old Trafford.

Let’s hope the teenager gets his chance and shines this season with the Reds lacking in attacking options, especially with Romelu Lukaku’s expected departure.

Meanwhile, fellow United youngsters Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong start in tonight’s u21 game for Neil Wood and Quinton Fortune’s side.
