Timothy Fosu-Mensah set to join Bundesliga side on season-long loan

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is set to join Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin on a loan deal until the end of the season according to Sky Germany.

The Dutchman impressed last season during his loan spell at Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace, but is set for another year away from Old Trafford after failing to force himself into Jose Mourinho’s plans for the new season.

New signing Diogo Dalot is to provide cover for United captain Antonio Valencia at right-back, a position which Fosu-Mensah has played much of his football in his United career.

Fosu-Mensah was also unlikely to occupy a centre-back role where he played for Crystal Palace, with United already stacked in that position, even if they fail to complete our rumoured move for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

The 20-year-old’s move to Hertha Berlin will come as a disappoint to United fans who enjoyed watching his assured performances during United’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Many fans, including myself, would have preferred to see Fosu-Mensah at Old Trafford this season, even in an understudy role. The Dutchman is more than adequate defensive cover in the Premier League, as proven with his performances at Palace; most notably his outstanding display keeping Man City quiet at Selhurst Park.

It is a step backwards for the club if Matteo Darmian is the one kept as defensive cover this season over the youngster who could still have a bright future at Old Trafford.
