Man Utd concentrate on £55m target to make it three signings this summer

Manchester United are reportedly set to up their interest in Belgium international Toby Alderweireld, according to The Telegraph.

United have been continuously linked with an attempt to sign the Tottenham Hotspur defender this summer.

Alderweireld, 29, has 75 international caps for his country, played just 21 games for Spurs last season, amounting to just 13 Premier League starts.

He joined Tottenham back in July 2015 following a switch from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and has scored six goals in 109 games for the North London club, although that’s not exactly his job. At United, Alderweireld will be expected to sure up Jose Mourinho’s defence to make David de Gea’s a bit easier.

After confirming two arrivals this week – Fred and Diogo Dalot – the report claims United will now concentrate on signing Alderweireld as our next acquisition.

Alderweireld is contracted at Spurs until June 2019, therefore, Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy need to decide quickly what path to take. Sell now or risk losing a world-class defender for less – potentially on a free.

This transfer saga is one that could drag on until the end of the World Cup with Alderweireld representing Roberto Martinez’s Belgium.
