Manchester United plan summer midfield reshuffle, claims Miguel Delaney

Chief Football Writer for the Independent, Miguel Delaney, is one of the most trustworthy journalists when it comes to inside scoops that concern Manchester United.

Previously, Delaney claimed that Jorginho would be seen as an alternative to Toni Kroos, although the latest on that is the German won’t leave Real Madrid while Napoli’s Jorginho has his heart set on Manchester City or Liverpool.

The Independent’s report suggests United have made Lazio’s Sergej Milinković-Savić and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred their primary midfield targets for the summer.

With Michael Carrick retiring at the end of the season a reshuffle in midfield wouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but I would be lying if I said I pay any attention to Lazio or Shakhtar to know whether either of the midfielders listed by the Independent are consistent or good enough.

In that case, we just need to trust Mourinho’s judgement. He’s paid to make the big decisions as United manager whereas we simply pass comment and judgement. Sound unfair? Well, I don’t think we’re anywhere near as critical as others.

Carrick retiring, even though he hasn’t featured much this season, still leaves a big hole in United’s midfield and one that needs to be filled before the new season starts. It’s an area of the pitch that needs improving and I’m slightly gutted to hear Jorginho has put his nose up at United because he would prefer to play for one of our rivals.

Anyway, we won’t lose sleep over it.
