De Boer: Jasper Cillessen expected to stay at Ajax

Ajax boss Frank de Boer expects Jasper Cillessen to stay at Ajax despite reported interest from Manchester United.

Cillessen had been tipped as a possible replacement to David de Gea, but is he really a step up from Victor Valdes?

Every week United are linked with a different goalkeeper and it’s getting to the stage now that you have to wonder what the future holds for Valdes.

Arriving on a free, signing an 18-month contract and to continuing sitting on the bench even when de Gea leaves? It doesn’t make sense unless an upgrade becomes available.

Ajax boss De Boer has told Voetbal International he is confident he will keep Cillessen.

“He is very important to us so we do not want to lose him,” De Boer said.

“I’m assuming that he stays.”

Cillessen became Netherlands’ first-choice goalkeeper during Louis van Gaal’s World Cup campaign in 2014.

Dutch journalist Elko Born reacted to De Boer’s interview with the following, via Twitter.
