Rooney set for early return

Wayne Rooney was ruled out of tonight’s draw with Shakhtar Donetsk with a shin injury. It is believed he will be back in time for Saturday’s clash with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Rooney, aged 28, picked up a knock in training yesterday following a collision with Danny Welbeck. Initially there were concerns that he would miss this weekend’s clash but asked whether he would be fit or not, David Moyes confirmed Rooney is in line to return.

“I think so. It’s not that serious, he just took it in a clash with Danny Welbeck [in training] and it’s swollen up.”

Saturday’s game is the last before the international break. After a difficult start for Moyes, it would be nice to go out on a positive note and return on a clean slate.
