United confirmed in June that they were releasing Sancho upon the expiry of his contract, choosing not to trigger a 12-month extension option that would have allowed them to command a transfer fee. It was the final chapter of a deeply disappointing stint at the club – one that began with an £85m move from Dortmund in the summer of 2021 and unravelled through a loss of form, a fractious breakdown with Erik ten Hag, and three loan spells back to Dortmund, then Chelsea, then Aston Villa.
