Carrick’s future in doubt as Bournemouth rout leaves United 16th, a point above the drop

Manchester United were beaten at home by Bournemouth on Sunday 25 October, and their winless run now stands at eight games. Michael Carrick's position is openly in question before the trip to Chelsea.

No United side has begun a Premier League campaign this badly, and Sunday only deepened the slump. They have not kept a league clean sheet this season. The club has not announced a decision on Michael Carrick’s future.

Defensive errors hand Bournemouth control at Old Trafford

Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute. The goal came from a Justin Kluivert free-kick. Ayden Heaven gave away the foul with a wild challenge. Tavernier doubled the lead five minutes later after Leny Yoro slipped. Evanilson added the third in the 71st minute after Senne Lammens came off his line.

The captain, Bruno Fernandes, was dropped and never got off the bench. He had criticised Carrick’s tactics after the Como defeat. In Neville’s view, those remarks took aim squarely at Carrick and how he sets up the team. Without Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo was the only United starter with a Premier League goal for the club in 2026.

Carrick changed things at half-time. Youri Tielemans came off and Matheus Cunha went on. Lisandro Martinez had replaced Heaven by the time of the third goal. None of it changed the course of the game.

For Bournemouth, the result made it four wins in a row in all competitions. They have now won three times at Old Trafford by three goals or more. Since 1992/93, only Liverpool have done that more often, with four. Their head coach, Marco Rose, expressed empathy for Carrick afterwards.

Fans turn on the owners but sing Carrick’s name

Supporters booed the players off at full-time. In the Stretford End, the anger was aimed at the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox. The same fans sang Carrick’s name as he went down the tunnel.

Carrick did a lap of applause for the supporters. He insisted it was not a farewell. He said he did not know what would happen next and would keep doing his best for the club. At his post-match news conference he added that he understood the situation and was carrying on as normal. He also said he was not expecting a decision either way. Carrick signed a two-year contract with the club in May.

The verdict from the television studio was harsher. Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both said the club would or should sack him, with Carragher calling his position untenable.

The table explains the pressure. United’s run has dragged them into a fight near the bottom rather than the top. A manager who still has the crowd’s backing must now find results quickly.

United’s next match is away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 31 October 2026, with kick-off at 12:30.
