Wolverhampton Wanderers are slowly conceding they will be cornered into facilitating the departures of some of their most influential stars if their dismal form continues.

With the first half of the campaign now played out, the Molineux faithful are resigned to spending 2026/2027 in the Championship.

Wolves have picked up only three points from 19 matches played, overseeing three draws and a whopping 16 defeats.

They did put an end to their 12-game losing streak at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, however, when they were able to claim a point from a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on the Red Devils’ home soil.

While simultaneously fretting over the side’s lacklustre showing, INEOS chiefs would’ve utilised the game to also get a closer look at how target Joao Gomes fared.

United have been linked with Gomes on numerous occasions in the weeks leading up to the window opening amid their ongoing search for a proven midfielder to add to Ruben Amorim’s ranks.

Given the likes of Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson will undoubtedly be staying at their respective clubs this month, the Wolves star has arisen as a viable option to pursue mid-season.

This week, he played the full 90 minutes of the clash with United and earned himself a notable 7.5 rating on Fotmob.

The 24-year-old completed three dribbles, two passes into the final third and one accurate long ball. Defensively, he made three tackles, two clearances, one headed clearance, two interceptions and five recoveries, earning himself the Man of the Match award at full-time.

When weighing in on United’s ongoing interest in Gomes on Thursday, Ben Jacobs told The United Stand: “Manchester United have discussed [Joao Gomes] internally, yes. It’s possible that Wolves sanction a sale, but there has been no formal approach yet to Wolves or to the player.

“And that’s because they’re weighing up, if we sign Joao Gomes, we’ve probably only got room for one senior midfielder in the summer.”
