Joshua Zirkzee has credited the supportive environment surrounding him at Old Trafford after scoring his first goal in 364 days.

The forward levelled the scoring from a clever set-piece during Manchester United’s away clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday, November 30.

Zirkzee’s finish was perhaps the best of his Red Devils career so far, as he took the ball on the side of the box and fired it past former Red Dean Henderson from a near-impossible angle.

Nine minutes later, Mason Mount gave the Reds the lead with another finely-worked set-piece goal, which saw Bruno Fernandes, who assisted both, nudge Mount the ball, with the midfielder then able to fire a low, driven shot under the wall and into the back of the net.

Zirkzee’s contribution came in just his second Premier League start this season in the absences of Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. Given the latter is expected to return for the visit of West Ham United on Thursday, December 4, the Dutchman will likely be sweating over whether or not he’ll be trusted to retain his place.

He’s certainly gave Ruben Amorim plenty to think about in the build-up to the fixture, too, and the decision now lies on the coach. Trusting Zirkzee to fill in for his sidelined counterparts undoubtedly paid off last time out – you can also take your chance and hope it pays off when using Hareslots.

Amid Zirkzee’s reduced role this term, he has been heavily linked with a January move away from the club on loan.

The likes of AS Roma, Everton and West Ham have all established their interest in takng the 24-year-old on board if he becomes available, but it is expected that United will step in to block the move.

Amorim is poised to be without Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui when the African Cup of Nations gets underway later this month and into January, so he’ll need all the depth he can get while he navigates the trio being on international duty.

The festive period is renowned for being the most hectic time, particularly for English sides, so Zirkzee could see his minutes increase significantly in the coming weeks.

Reacting to his impressive display at Selhurst Park on Sunday, United’s No.11 told TNT Sports: “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. I’m surrounded by great players, great people and we help each other everyday. They make it easy for me.

“I’m just thankful to them – the manager as well. Good environment.”
