Andy Mitten says Elliot Anderson is ‘absolutely’ the midfielder that Manchester United want to sign next year.

It comes after the Red Devils have been linked with the 24-year-old on countless occasions in recent weeks, particularly since the summer window closed and a new midfield addition became their top priority for 2026.

United’s midfielder interest: What’s happened so far?

Back in August, United initiated contact with Brighton and Hove Albion to try and gauge the feasibility of a deal for Carlos Baleba. However, the Seagulls’ £100 million+ valuation, after a window in which the Reds had already shelled out over £200 million, meant nothing materialised from their talks.

INEOS then conceded that not all areas of Ruben Amorim’s squad could be strengthened before deadline day, and they made a new midfielder their main target moving forward.

While a marquee signing like Anderson, who’s also valued around the £100m mark by Nottingham Forest, won’t be on the move until at least the end of the campaign, it hasn’t stopped United from sizing up how they’ll go about their pursuit.

A stop-gap acquisition such as Conor Gallagher may be brought in in January to provide some reinforcements for Amorim amid yet another turbulent run, but then all attention will be turned to Anderson, according to Mitten.

“I mentioned Elliot Anderson a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely, Manchester United would love to sign him. It is obvious,” said the United expert on Tuesday’s Talk of the Devils podcast.

“He’s absolutely the player that Manchester United want.”

Mitten proceeded to humorously send a direct message to the England international, adding:  “If you’re listening to this, Elliot Anderson, look at what fellow Geordie, Bryan Robson, did in 1981. You can join one of the biggest football clubs in the world, and you can be part of their recovery.

“This train is only going to pass once for you, son. Get on the train, because you will never, ever regret it.”

  1. Why do United want to spend 100M and then destroy him by forcing him to play under Amorim. Just sack Amorim, his compensation will be far less, and United will improve tremendously without having to buy any player. Have mercy on the players and the club.
