Ruben Amorim singles out ‘smart’ Manchester United star who can play ‘anywhere’

New Manchester United head coach was impressed with at least one player after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday.

The result was disappointing and we’ve focused on the performance, singling out those who didn’t perform but now it’s time to look at those who did.

After his first game in charge, Ruben Amorim decided to praise Noussair Mazraoui’s performance against the Tractor Boys.

The Morocco international was one of the few players who could hold their head high after the game, using his experience and versatility to play in a makeshift back three.

Many elements of United’s performance raised eyebrows for the wrong reasons, but some were good. Take Marcus Rashford’s two-minute opener as an example and how it came from a sublime Amad Diallo solo run down the right flank.

However, Mazraoui has left a good impression on his new coach, like he did under Erik ten Hag, before the Dutchman was sacked by the club.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Amorim waxed lyrical over Mazraoui after bemoaning the lack of options at centre back.

“We don’t have too many centre-backs so we have to adapt some players. I thought Noussair Mazraoui did very well.

“He is so smart and is so important for us. He can play anywhere and that kind of player is crucial for our future.”

Mazraroui has been United’s best summer recruit in terms of consistent performances. The full-back, who can play several different roles, has adapted to life in English football very quickly.

The one role United fans won’t want to see Mazraroui playing is as a number 10 like he did under Ten Hag away to Fenerbahce in the Europa League last month.

One thing is clear already. Amorim is a different man with different ideas for the team moving forward. We suspect Mazraroui will have a big role to play in that if he stays fit.
