£38.5 million Manchester United star will prove doubters wrong – opinion

Manchester United’s new boy Matthijs de Ligt has been scrutinised for his performances for the Netherlands in the International break.

Matthijs de Ligt made a couple of errors for Holland in the latest international fixtures and will be looking to focus on settling into life as a  Red Devil.

Several media outlets have put pressure on the new Red Devil with many questioning the 25-year-old’s quality.

The former Ajax captain started his first Manchester United game against bitter rivals Liverpool last time out.

The Dutchman made an impressive showing, especially in the first half, despite the 3-0 defeat to Arne Slot’s side.

De Ligt will be hoping he can become a regular starter in Erik ten Hag’s side, starting with Saturday’s trip to Saint Mary’s to face newly promoted Southampton.

Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth believes that De Ligt will be a success at Old Trafford.

Speaking to the official Manchester United website when De Ligt’s move was confirmed, Ashworth said: “Matthijs is an outstanding defender and proven winner who will add quality, experience and leadership to our existing group of senior players.

“He has already enjoyed considerable success in his career, and we are convinced that his best years are still ahead; we want to help him achieve them at Manchester United.”

Matthijs de Ligt mindset will be key to Manchester United success

The former Bayern Munich star has a really strong attitude and mindset that will help him ignore comments from the media.

De Ligt has played for several big clubs including Juventus, so he will know the standards that he has to maintain.

The former Juventus man will learn that the English media can be critical and will look to scrutinise any errors made, especially those surrounding Manchester United.

The defender is a talented player and can become a reliable option at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag hopes that his new summer addition will form a good relationship with fellow defender Lisandro Martinez, who is the Dutch coach looking to turn around the Red Devils’ recent form.
