Erik ten Hag has admitted that Manchester United are not currently in a position to rival the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
Speaking now, four weeks away from the end of the season, that statement is fairly obvious. But heading into the campaign, supporters had high hopes of what awaited them in just the second year of the Dutchman’s tenure.
He could well end the term with another trophy depending on how the Reds fare in the FA Cup final. And to say that prior to 2023/2024, United had gone six years without lifting any form of silverware, two in two seasons isn’t that bad going.
Still, the Old Trafford faithful long for the days of sitting atop the table, taking points off of direct contenders for the title and eventually, come May, being crowned champions once again.
United currently sit 24 points away from league leaders Arsenal, who last claimed the title 20 years ago.
In comparison, United’s most recent – and 13th – Premier League came in Sir Alex Ferguson’s farewell campaign almost 11 years ago, and they simply cannot let it get to the length of Arsenal’s continued wait – let alone Liverpool’s (30 years).

Ten Hag weighed in on this season’s affairs amongst those at the top compared to his side’s standing.
“It’s not just a two or three-horse race in the league,” he began, via MUTV. “There’s [Aston] Villa, there’s Spurs, [and] there’s Newcastle. So many good teams, who all can compete. We’re one of them, but we’re not, at this moment, in a position to compete No.1 or No.2. That’s a fact.
“This year, we stand still, but when everyone is available, definitely we’re competing for the top four. I’m confident of that.”
“We can come closer if we make a good window,” the manager added, seemingly sending a clear message to the Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co. “We have to strengthen in key positions and also in the depth of the squad, which is one of the lessons from this season.”
