‘Something special’: PL boss says Ten Hag’s ‘incredible’ Ajax side is one the ‘best teams’ he’s ever seen

Vincent Kompany has spoken in support of Erik ten Hag ahead of his side’s trip to Old Trafford this afternoon.

Manchester United host Burnley in one of Saturday’s 3pm kick-offs, with the three points vital to both clubs as one looks to close the gap on the European places and the other, avoid the dreaded drop.

It comes amidst a turbulent period for the Red Devils, although, to be fair, you can say that about any stage of this season and it be true. The midweek win against rock-bottom Sheffield United put an end to an unwanted four-game winless streak, so following that with another victory today is crucial.

Such fluctuating form has cast doubt on Ten Hag’s future in the dugout. Speculation is rife over whether he’ll still be at the reins when the 2024/2025 campaign kicks off, and the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier this year has only heaped more pressure on the Dutchman’s shoulders to make a lasting impression.

Kompany’s praise for Ten Hag

Kompany, somewhat surprisingly given that he’s an ex-Blue, has lauded Ten Hag’s coaching – albeit not for his time at United.

Instead, the Clarets boss hailed Ten Hag’s work with Ajax, whom he managed for five years before departing for Manchester in 2022.

“I’ve witnessed some of the best playing teams I’ve ever played against as a manager and that I’ve seen in my whole career,” Kompany began in his pre-match press conference. “So when his team at Ajax were playing, it was something special.

“It wasn’t something you could attribute to a team of that age because they were really young or the financial resources; it was incredible.

“They were up there with the best teams I’ve ever seen play. You know most of those teams in recent times have been associated with Pep [Guardiola]. Of course, there were other managers as well. He was one of them, you know for sure.”

He continued: “It’s not like we go out for coffees or anything, but I have followed his trajectory, and he’s one of those reference coaches. That’s the reality of it. It goes a little bit against the trend right now, but I’m telling the truth.”
