Ole Gunnar Solskjaer emerges as leading candidate for Republic of Ireland job

The search for the next Republic of Ireland manager has taken another twist with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s suddenly becoming a leading candidate for the job.

It was looking increasingly likely that John O’Shea would be given the role full-time, after recently serving as interim manager for two friendly matches.

Now a surge of money placed on Solskjaer in the betting markets suggests that the FAI could appoint the former Manchester United manager as their new head coach.

Could John O’Shea or Roy Keane come in as his assistant?

Solskjaer’s odds were slashed by 8/15 by Paddy Power on Friday afternoon, as cited by The Irish Times.

The bookmakers aren’t always right, but we believe there could be something in this… Solskjaer has been out of work since getting the sack at United in 2021.

As someone with a decent record in both the Premier League and European competition, his CV would outweigh the majority of the other candidates for the role.

The rumours of Solskjaer’s links to the Ireland job have drawn a positive reaction from Irish United fans.

It would be an intriguing fit and we hope there’s some truth to it all.
