World Cup-winner Mario Kempes impressed by Manchester United starlet

Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho is currently away with the Argentina squad for the March international break.

Despite growing up in Madrid, Spain, Garnacho decided he would represent Argentina but the World Cup winners needed to cap him three times to prevent him from changing his mind (again) to Spain.

Garnacho got his three caps but he was dropped for the round of internationals in November.

The 19-year-old has been in top form this season and is the only United player to make every matchday squad in 2023/24. He will hope that he gets the opportunity to play at a major competition in the same side as Lionel Messi. Of course, there is a strong possibility that will happen at the Copa America this summer.

However, there will be no Garnacho and Messi link-up during this international break since the Inter Miami star had to pull out of the squad to face El Salvador and Costa Rica due to injury.

Mario Kempes, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978, believes the United forward has developed his game in recent months.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Kempes said: “He is a much more important player for Manchester United than he was a few months ago. He is another of the possible solutions that the Argentina coach can find for the National Team.

“He’s beginning to understand his role in the team more, much more sacrificed.”

Garnacho is joined in the Argentina squad by United defender Lisandro Martinez. The centre-back won’t be fit enough to feature in the upcoming internationals, but he is expected to return to fitness for United in the near future.
