Long-term United absentee joins up with national team to continue injury rehabilitation

Luke Shaw has joined the England camp this international break to continue his rehabilitation from a muscle injury.

The Manchester United star is overseeing his third spell on the sidelines this term in what’s been another injury-plagued campaign for the 28-year-old.

He has now missed 25 matches in all competitions and may have already played his last game of the 2023/2024 season after the club confirmed last month that he would be unavailable for an extended period.

Today, Henry Winter revealed that Shaw is with his England teammates at St. George’s Park despite not being able to play in their upcoming double-header of friendlies. Fellow Reds Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford are also there, as well as teenage starlet Kobbie Mainoo, who was promoted from the U21s to the senior squad on Tuesday.

Southgate voices Shaw concerns

Shaw’s frequent setbacks have placed his inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad in jeopardy. If he were fit, he’d undoubtedly make the starting 11 each week as he is one of the manager’s most trusted lieutenants, however, Southgate will be making plans without the left-back as it stands.

He recently said of the United defender: “Well, we have to say yes is the answer to that [Shaw being ‘touch-and-go’] because the timelines would suggest he will only be available in the dying embers of the season. You don’t know what version of the player you are going to get.

“We might have everybody that is currently injured back and available and how fit and how match fit and how robust to get through a tournament, we are going to have to work that out as well in the next few months.”
