‘I would love to have him’ – Mason Greenwood offered international football return

Jamaica manager Heimir Hallgrimsson admits that he would ‘love’ to offer Mason Greenwood a return to international football.

Greenwood, who has one cap for England which he earned on a controversial trip to Iceland in 2020, is currently on loan at Getafe. Gareth Southgate has not given the impression that he’d have Greenwood back in his Three Lions squad, so there is little to no chance of Greenwood being selected for Euro 2024.

There is also uncertainty about the future of Greenwood at club level because Sir Jim Ratcliffe promised to make a fresh decision on it. The 22-year-old joined Getafe when United decided that it would be best for the forward to continue his career away from Old Trafford after he had charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Greenwood denied all charges and they were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

Eligible to play for Jamaica via his father, Andrew, so it is possible to change Greenwood’s international allegiance.

At a CONCACAF Nations League preview event in Dallas on Tuesday, Jamaica boss Hallgrimsson confirmed that he has discussed the prospect of Greenwood being part of his squad.

“I really don’t like to talk about ‘what if’, but this, of course, has come to our mind,” the Icelandic coach told The Athletic. “I would love to have him in my team. Like all coaches, I would like to have the best players in our team, but it’s always up to the player himself if he wants to do it.”

Greenwood has shown decent form in La Liga this season, with seven goals and five assists for Getafe, which has prompted interest from Barcelona ahead of a potential summer move.

Getafe have also made it clear that they want to keep Greenwood beyond this season.
