Casemiro 4, Hojlund 9: player ratings from Luton Town 1-2 Manchester United

Manchester United are on a four-game winning streak in the Premier League following their latest victory – a nervy 2-1 win at Luton Town, with a first-half brace from Rasmus Hojlund securing all three points.

Just five points separate United and fourth-placed Aston Villa now and there is real momentum with the Reds now as we head into the crucial final three months of the season.

United started the game at Kenilworth Road in stunning form and in truth, the first 15 minutes were among the best they have performed this season.

Erik ten Hag’s men were ruthless and deservedly grabbed an early two-goal lead, with Hojlund becoming the youngest player in Premier League history to score in six consecutive games.

Luton, as they have been doing all season, proved why the bigger teams have struggled at their home ground as they fought their way back into the game and forced a nervy ending.

United held the hosts to the goal they scored in the first half and will return to Old Trafford with smiles on their faces.

Man United Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 6
Some debate over whether he could have done anything differently for Luton’s goal but that would be harsh.

Diogo Dalot – 7
Clearly a favourite at this point and you can see why. Not many players apply themselves as he does. Always there for the cause and ready to be counted.

Harry Maguire – 5
Off at half-time after being booked. Like one of his team-mates, he was a ticking time bomb today and was bound to get sent off. Good coaching by Ten Hag to take him off.

Raphael Varane – 8
His good form continues. One of the first names on the team sheet.

Luke Shaw – 5
Just like last week, he was taken off after 45 minutes. Struggled and now almost certain to be sidelined.

Casemiro – 4
A poor outing from the Brazil international. Lucky not to get sent off for a second bookable offence. Ten Hag was right to take him off at half-time.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8
Another brilliant display by the teenager.

Alejandro Garnacho – 6
Decision-making continues to be very poor in the decisive moments. Could have cost United today.

Bruno Fernandes – 5
Not the performance you usually get from the skipper. Uncharacteristically sloppy.

Marcus Rashford – 7
Put himself about and never stopped running. Good effort.

Rasmus Hojlund – 9
The star of the show. Seven goals in six Premier League appearances.

  1. Dalot hides in defence. He positions himself like a RCB on defence leaving the marauding Doughty with acres of space to put in cross after cross. ETH still hasn’t figured how to defend against a team where the forwards drop into the midfield outnumbering Casemiro and killing him with speed. We sold Chong because he could not beat a training beacon yet he looked world class yesterday against Casemiro and Dalot. That other coach employs 3 CM to counter this threat. We have the ballers who can play that way and transition unto attack Arambat & Mainoo should sit deeper with Bruno roving in that 10 role
