United have ‘enquired’ about signing 20-year-old Raphael Varane replacement with £34.1m price tag

Manchester United are putting the wheels in motion on how to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad this summer.

Now that the Premier League have finally ratified Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent stake, the next transfer window could be a pivotal one for United, as it’ll mark the first-ever one under INEOS’ guidance and control.

As such, Ten Hag will have already outlined what areas of his team he wants to see reinforced and the backline will likely be a starting point.

The experienced and successful Raphael Varane looks set to depart Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season, with his £340,000-a-week wages proving troublesome to justify the older he gets.

Jonny Evans also only signed a one-year deal when he returned to M16 last year and it’s improbable that the 36-year-old will be offered fresh terms.

As per Italian outlet CalcioMercato (cited by TeamTalk), United have ‘enquired’ about the prospect of signing Atalanta’s 20-year-old stalwart Giorgio Scalvini, who has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Juventus.

The Serie A outfit were believed to want around £51.3 million to sanction their starlet’s exit, but after United and Dortmund made their approaches, Atalanta have named their price tag as £34.1m.
