Luke Shaw only recently returned from a long-term injury, having missed a sizeable chunk of the first half of the season after sustaining the injury in the first few games of the season.
That forced United to sign a temporary replacement in the summer market, with Sergio Reguilon coming in on loan but that season-long arrangement was cut short last month as Shaw had returned.
There were worries at Villa Park, the scene of United’s latest Premier League win, on Sunday, however, as the England international was brought off at half-time.
It didn’t look like the left-back was struggling with any discomfort in the minutes leading up to the interval but now, speaking after the game, Erik ten Hag has provided an update on the situation.
“Precaution,” Ten Hag is quoted as saying by the BBC.
“He had some complaints and we can’t take any risks with him because he’s had any injuries in the past. We’ll have to see how it goes in the next few days. It’s not an advantage to lose him, everyone knows my philosophy to have left-footers at left centre-back and left-back. We have to make compromises and it is not to our advantage.”
Unfortunately, the philosophy Ten Hag is speaking of has been difficult to put in place this season as both Lisandro Martinez and Shaw have been missing for the majority of the campaign.
Hopefully, Shaw’s injury was just a precaution and it won’t be anything that keeps him on the sidelines again as he is hugely important to this side.
