David de Gea rejected short-term move to Premier League club in January

Nottingham Forest wanted to sign former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in the January transfer window.

De Gea, 33, has been a free agent since being released by Manchester United at the end of last season.

The claim comes from a report via The Athletic, but the Premier League newcomers were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign De Gea until the end of the season.

Forest added a new goalkeeper to their squad on transfer deadline day, with Matz Sels joining from Strasbourg.

However, prior to Sels’ arrival, Forest spoke to De Gea and tried to persuade him to join Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. They promised him regular game time between now and the end of the season.

De Gea turned down the short-term offer and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Spaniard. Let us know in the comments section if you think he is contemplating retirement or has something lined up.

It would have been a great signing for Forest after they opted to sign Matt Turner over Dean Henderson in the summer.
