Sofyan Amrabat sent off as Morocco crash out of AFCON

After a shock 2-0 defeat to South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations last night, Sofyan Amrabat is heading back to Manchester United.

It was a poor night for the Moroccan midfielder, on loan at United from Fiorentina, after he was sent off in stoppage time with the score at 1-0 following a professional foul.

The result came as a shock because Morocco were one of the pre-tournament favourites, until South Africa’s Evidence Makgopa scored a brilliant opening goal with 57 minutes on the clock.

Morocco had a golden chance to equalise when Achraf Hakimi stood up the penalty spot, but he missed.

Matters were made worse for Morocco when Teboho Mokena secured the win for South Africa with a 95th minute free-kick.

After knocking out Morocco, South Africa will face Cape Verde in the quarter-finals.
